Fungi are the most important agents of wood decay and recycling of cellulose and lignin from dead wood. The most important cultivated edible and medicinal fungi are wood decay fungi. By wood decay in living trees, however, they pose dangers for people and property, since these fungi can impair the stability and fracture-safety of trees in public places and gardens. Different fungi show different wood decay patterns, which also depend on the specific response of the tree species.
